Environmental Training given
‘Green Light’ from the IEMA
March hailed the success and approval of the New
Foundation in Environmental Management training course, researched,
developed and delivered by Tern Associates Ltd.
World Environment Day, June 5th 2007, heralds the official launch of this
new Amicus course!
A partnership between Amicus the Union and Envirowise has proved to be a
resounding success providing Environmental awareness for Trade Unionists.
The submission and initial course, researched, developed and delivered by
Tern Associates Ltd, held in Esher in March has received approval from the
Institute of Environmental Management & Assessment (IEMA) the UK’s
professional environmental body.
This new environmental course developed to compliment existing training
for Amicus Safety and Workplace Representatives offers members the
opportunity to gain an appreciation of environmental issues. Employment
Law and Health & Safety training currently provides members with a wealth
of knowledge and appreciation of legislation aimed to protect their
wellbeing and that of the wider membership. Environmental awareness
provides Amicus Representatives with a ‘new tool’ to stimulate change and
aid co-operation. The course illustrates how through integration of
environmental matters improvements in workplace health and safety, energy
conservation, resource efficiency and waste minimisation can be made,
contributing towards a sustainable future.
The IEMA Assessor gave this foundation course the ‘green light’ following
an initial review of the course materials, observations of training and
meeting face-to-face with delegates, listening to their views and
discussing feedback on the weeks events. Ian Stoves, a delegate, commented
how he was now better able to influence changes in the workplace and
encourage his children to turn off unnecessary lights; reducing energy
consumption, saving money and helping the environment.
As environmental stakeholders, union members can play a vital role in
reducing the overall waste burden improving efficiency and encouraging
active environmental stewardship. Building on the delegates past
experience, the course encourages delegates to research topics of
interest, allowing interactive discussion and provides an opportunity to
present information to their peers on their conclusions, broadening their
knowledge and understanding of global, national and workplace
environmental issues.
Public awareness, media attention and the ongoing threat of increasing
environmental taxation, will impact on poor performing businesses and
communities who see costs spiral. Amicus the Union, in response, is
equipping members with the ability to ‘fight back’ by reducing their own
Carbon Footprint and by making positive contribution which will
inevitability improve the prosperity of our communities, the health of our
nation, reduce the waste burden and strive towards a sustainable future.
